school in March

It's that time of year...

*not quite close enough to see the end of the school year in sight
*the newness of a new year has worn off
*the pencils are all broken with zero eraser left at the end (do you know what sound the end of a pencil makes when it is rubbed eraser-less onto a paper over and over???!?)

I am already thinking of new things we will start and try for our next school year (adding a kindergartener!) But we still have 3 months of school left to this year!

Solution number one- we will take a spring break soon.

Solution number two- we will sharpen all of the pencils and scrounge up new erasers.

Solution number three- we will read educational quotes to get inspired about finishing the 2010-2011 year strong!

Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.
John Dewey

Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought
for with ardor and diligence.

Abigail Adams

Much education today is monumentally ineffective.
All too often we are giving young people cut
flowers when we should be teaching them to
grow their own plants.

John W. Gardner

What we want to see is the child in pursuit
of knowledge,
not knowledge in pursuit
of the child.

~ George Bernard Shaw

Education
is not
the filling
of a pail,
but the lighting
of a fire.

~ William Butler Yeats

When you want to teach children to think,
you begin by treating them seriously when they are little,
giving them responsibilities, talking to them candidly,
providing privacy and solitude for them, and making
them readers and thinkers of significant thoughts from
the beginning. That's if you want to teach them to think.

~ Bertrand Russell

Nobody rises to
low expectations.

~ Calvin Lloyd

Live as if you were to die tomorrow,
learn as if you will live forever
.
-Gandhi

It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to
have tried to succeed.

~ Theodore Roosevelt

Far and away the best prize that life offers is the
chance to work hard at work worth doing.

~ President Theodore Roosevelt

Teachers and homeschool moms- how is it going? Are you going to finish strong? With God's help we can! This is the time of year we are tempted to sleep in and skip the most important inspiration and help of all time- God's Word!!!! You know you will feel 100% better if you get up before the kids and get that encouragement from the greatest Teacher!

Keep on keeping on my homeschool friend! A morning spent on a "field trip" outside can inspire and motivate!

Sara! Thank you for the awesome educational quotes!!! I am so using a few of them on the back of my monthly newsletter to my kindergarten parents! Perfect. Thank you.
Also..........you're right!! I need to be reminded that the best encouragement I can get is straight from THE greatest teacher, our LORD!!

Really love the quotes! It is interesting to see what some of the great thinkers have to say on the subject.

Yes...I know the sound of an eraserless pencil well! I have also found that not erasers met their demise scrubbing out wrong answers! Some of them are in bits and pieces on our schoolroom floor...after being used as projectiles toward unsuspecting classmates! Ahhh...gotta love this time of year!
Hugs to all ya!

One thing I look forward to is our homeschool convention in April. It is always inspiring and gives me strength for the rest of the school year.

Oh, man. I love your pictures. Love the quotes. And I love your honesty.
Our pencils are also down to stubs, eraserless.
We worked outside today, and tomorrow is Field Trip day!! I'd rather work a bit in the summer, and take these first beautiful spring days off. :)

In a about a month and a half, we are scheduled to do our standardized testing for the year and it is SO hard to NOT flip the OFF switch once that little task is done!!
We will keep on moving forward...on the most dreary days, I remind myself what a blessing it is to be able to homeschool--I really wouldn't trade it for the world!
Thanks for the encouragement :D
