the couch/sofa saga

I love our green couch. This couch has been with us for 10 years- thanks Gigi and Pops for the hand-me-down!

(one of our previous houses)

We got a slipcover made and have lived with this green plaid for the 10 years. It is just the comfiest couch- I slept on it for the third trimester of my 3 pregnancies- awww. I just found out that I can throw the slipcovers in the washer- I always thought I had to dry clean it- I have no idea why I thought this- I am just slow- so after 10 years we have finally cleaned the slipcovers and I am so happy that it is clean!

But alas, the slipcover is not going to last much longer- there are places where it is threadbare. I know it will be coming soon- so I am preparing and saving for the time when we have no other choice but to toss the slipcovers(s). Here are our options:

(1) a new or used sectional sofa- this is what our friends had in this house before we rented and finally bought it from them. I mention sectional sofas because we have two couches now and the other couch is on it's last leg too (bought from the Salvation Army for $45)- so a sectional would totally solve this problem of needing 2 couches. We need the seating- we often have people over and need this much seating (and more). Who has a sectional sofa? What is your opinion?

(2) Have someone make a new slipcover for the green couch and a new slipcover for the red couch - I could also paint the wooden part on the red couch.

(3) Start looking on Craig's list for used couches

So those are the boring details of the mincy couches. I am leaning towards getting new slipcovers- because the couches are still good on the inside (they have good hearts :)

Tell me, just for fun, what do you call it? couch, chesterfield, davenport, sofa.........

Also, I have been thinking about purses because we are going to have a purse exchange at church- sounds fun, right? We all bring old purses and come home with new (to us) ones.

So what do you call that? Purse, pocketbook, handbag,...............
reticule

I call it a couch and a purse.

I say, pray about the couches and see what happens! God has a funny way of doing something even better than any plan we could come up with!

I LOVE the purse exchange idea. Sounds like something fun to do in our MOPS group!

I call it a couch...however my grandma called it a davenport and lived on Davenport Street. It took me many years after she passed to make that connection.
And purses are purses. A purse exchange! How fun!

We call it a couch or sofa. I call it a purse.

We just got a new sectional sofa or our family room and I LOVE it. It is a total "man couch" as it reclines, is dark brown, and has cup holders in the love seat portion, but it is so super comfy! Measure wisely if this the route you go, ours almost didn't fit down the stairs into our basement. It was very tight! Good luck in your search!

I say couch and purse.
Somehow I don't see a sectional in your home. My son and his wife just got a new sectional. It's half leather and half that micro fiber stuff. It's gorgeous but took up soooo much space. There room was big but the furniture filled it up totally. I am in the same "boat", two couches that aren't going to last long. If you love what you have get slipcovers. I have read lately that people use vintage sheets and even painting drop cloths to recover. Brenda at Cozy Little House uses quilts......I have decided to try that. Anxious to see what you decide. Boy, I am rambling.

Couch and purse here :)

We had a sectional and it was very comfy, but what I don't like is that you can never rearrange your furniture, it can only go one way and it limits where you can put it. I say go with 2 couches, or just get new slipcovers. And why haven't you painted the wood on that one couch? Think of all the fun designs you could do, or just paint in black and a fun slipcover and polka dot pillows! Have fun, can't wait to see what you do :)

I think "couch" or "sofa" ...and "purse", for sure. Sectionals give you less "rearranging" options. I say recover your current couches. They seem to work beautifully...unless you find some amazing deal at a garage sale this summer? something that may not need any recovering...

It is so funny that you should be posting about couches(that's what I call em) We just went through a whole drama with the same dilemma. A few weeks ago my hubby and I spent the whole day at furniture stores and finally decided on and purchased a sectional for our small family room. We knew it would take up the whole room but we thought, what else to we do in there but watch tv. So to make a long story shorter, i hope, this past Saturday it was supposed to be delivered and they forgot to call us and tell us it hadn't arrived. This did not make us happy(we would have to wait another two weeks) So we canceled the order. We're so glad we did. We rearranged our existing furniture and love it! Boy did we save a ton of money. Now I think I'll paint the walls for a new look. Much cheaper:) I vote for work with what you have and your wonderful creativity!
Sorry this was so long, just had to share:)
Good Luck! and have fun with the purse exchange. I call it a pocketbook. haha

we have a sectional and I can still rearrange it a couple of ways in the house we are in now.The down side is it really doesn't give you any extra seating than a couch and a love seat.It can get a little "too cozy" with some guest.Sometimes it's kind of awkward.
Purse and sofa but only because we own a furniture business and it's the "proper" term.:-)

I call them couches and purses. We bought modular furniture two years ago after our two couches bit the dust and I LOVE it. It's six pieces that can be arranged any way you'd like. On the weekend we like to push all six together in a big rectangle and the whole family piles in with sheets and blankets to watch a movie and then the kids sleep there. It is big for the space we have, but I love it anyway.

I love sleeping on my couches too...not even when I am pregnant, LOL! They are soooo comfy and I could never part with them. I bought beautiful slipcovers from Target about seven years ago and you can take them off and wash them any time you want! I love them! Waverly makes the most gorgeous patterns! Just another option. I have also seen slipcovers for great prices off and on at Ross! You can get matching ones or you can get a couple different patterns to mix it up! They have large sofa sizes and loveseat sizes and even ones for chairs! I picked up a beautimous oversized chair one on clearance for $10 about six years ago and it is my most favorite one!
Just another option because I know how attached I get to really special and comfy furniture!

Couch. Purse. I love the idea of a sectional...but I get scared I will quickly grow to hate it and be stuck. it also limits the ways I can move my room around...or the potential to throw a slipcover on it later. BUT they are so comfy!

I just want to add that my grandmother called the couch a "divan". (And she would have LOVED your colorful, creative take on life!)

It's couch and purse for me, too. But my Canadian grandparents call the couch a chesterfield!

We have a sectional and love it. It is by Lazboy and has a fold out bed in it as well that we use for company. If I were in your shoes, though, I'd just make new slipcovers unless you found an awesome deal on a sectional on Craigs List or at a garage sale.

My parents have a sectional. The seats are very deep. Sometimes hard to get up from...but very confy to sleep on. I will find a pic and email it to you.

1. Is that Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion I see in your top photo? sigh- I miss it.
2. Do you find your red couch comfortable? Because we have the same exact one (from This End Up) and we call it The Coffin. Just a big wooden box with cushions.
3. I am sure that whatever you decide to do will be absolutely ADORABLE, because clearly, you can't do anything less than fabulous.
4. Couch & pocketbook.

We just had this same dilemma last fall..I LOVED my couch, but because our LR is so small, our couch and recliner had to be lined up against one wall, so our family of 5 all had to sit in a row, not even able to see each other..so silly! And forget about having company!! I prayed and prayed about what to do, as money is not something we have lots of, and lo and behold, the Lord arranged for me to be at the thrift store on the day they had this sweet little sectional for $50!!!! It's a nice and neutral tan color, smaller scale, so perfect for our LR and it looks as though it's never been sat on! It has been the best soulution for us, and we love to pile on it to watch movies..and when we have company, we can actually see their faces while we talk!:)
After saying all that, of course slipcovers can be a great option as long as the two couches are curretly working for you...
I know the Lord will give you just the right solution:)
Oh and to answer your question: couch and purse...we live in Minnesota, so when you say sofa, it's more like "soohfa" ;)

We have a sectional and I love it...wouldn't ever have 2 couches again! or a couch and a loveseat...
but it's a bit harder to re-arrange...which I like to do...ALOT! :0)
