the valentine tree & books

Jen asked me if having the books around the kitchen help the kids get into reading and do we do that all the time?

So, Jen, we usually have books around the kitchen. It helps the kids see what there is to read- especially after we get a stack at the library. I have just always loved seeing books propped up this way. I saw it first in my school library when I was small, then when I taught kindergarten, books were my favorite form of classroom decor. If it was February, there were pink and red and Valentine books all over, etc. So now this is my classroom and the kids and I love having the books as a part of our day. I would say that having the books displayed like this, and then changing the display frequently really does get the kids excited about the books.

Kimberly asked about the paper that I have on the side of the fridge- that is wrapping paper from World Market that is taped up.

And Monica had asked if Dave is a Scrabble fan because of the scrabble tiles on his Birthday canvas. Yes, he loves Scrabble and is teaching the boys, which is good, because they like it more than I do. My idea of a good game is Taboo or Catch Phrase or Mad Gab. But, opposites attract and we suffer through the other's games just in the name of love :)

See those verses there clipped to the tree? I have really been thinking about that lately - true love. A love for others that cares more about them than yourself. Love is the greatest gift. With God's help I want to give that love to my family and friends (and apparently enemies too...!). It is so easy to forget! It is so easy to love yourself instead, isn't it?!?! When we keep our focus on God, we will be so overwhelmed with His love for us, that we will want to give that love to others. I will quit preaching, sorry, it is just stuff that I need to be reminded about.

What do you think about I Cor. 13? What has helped you to show this kind of love? Does anyone else have trouble showing this kind of love 24/7, or is it just me!??!

How I Survive & How Things Get Done Around Here

1. I make sure the kids get in bed at a decent hour- the 2 year old is in bed by 7:30 and the boys get in bed by 8:00 (they can leave the light on and read and whisper for awhile, but they are in bed)

2. I make sure the kids do not get up before 7:30. the boys know this and have a clock. The 2 year old does not know how to tell time but I will send her back to bed to play quietly if she gets up before 7:30

3. I make all 3 kids have quiet time in the afternoon. They are separated and by themselves but they can play or read, play cds, whatever they want as long as they don't scream and yell or come out of their designated room.

After reading all of this it may sound like I never want to be with the kids! Actually, I think when you structure your day, it makes the time together better. We are together for the whole morning and have a lot of interaction with story time and school work together. Before and after quiet time is for playing outside or running errands, etc. Every meal is spent together (altho lunchtime is when the laptop comes to the table with me). I think when you stay home with your kids - you all need time apart and also alone time to read and be quiet.

4. I stick to the curriculum for homeschool with the exception of adding lots of library books and field trips. I have found a curriculum that I trust and like, so we don't continue to research for more textbooks. (that is the way it will be for us unless something is not working). This is not to say it is the right way- just what works for our family at this moment.

5. I beg my husband to be my alarm clock and make me get up early so that I can read my Bible and pray and get ready before the kids get up. This is the only way it works for me. What a different perspective you have for the day when you immerse yourself in God's word. Although I need to continue to meditate and pray during the day because I get so sidetracked and selfish and rotten and my focus gets OFF of where it should be!!

6. We work to set aside a time each week just for housecleaning. Most Fridays a sweet friend comes over and watches the kids for several hours and I get the mopping, bathrooms, dusting, etc done. Then the rest of the week I just try to keep up with laundry and dishes (the kids do the floors, make beds, empty trash, pick up every morning). Otherwise a person would be cleaning the house every minute of the day! When you stay at home with 3 kids it is always messy- so we just stick to this schedule and if things are messy, they are messy and I will deal with it when it is time. I have given up the dream of a spotless house- there are WAY too many other things to do than clean every day :)

7. Dave and I have worked time into the week just so I can paint. This is priceless. With 3 kids who need their momma- I am grateful for time uninterrupted to get some of this work done. And they love time with Dad- he has light saber fights with them.

8. Getting on the treadmill 3 or 4 times a week has helped with my energy. Not sure if this is partly due to my kids getting a little older- I don't have babies to get up with- but in any case- I have a lot more energy. I can work through nap time instead of napping through nap time.

9. I have an irresistible urge to create- and this is why the decorating and painting gets done. Everyone asks how I get it all done....most times it is not a planned thing- like the decoupaged and painted wall on Saturday night- there was the urge- I had the supplies on hand- the kids were in bed- I do it! Don't think about it - do it! Also, it helps to take on small parts. The kitchen as a whole is a huge job, but wall by wall- it can get done.

It also helps to have a very sweet husband who lets me paint whatever wall I want. Here he is wearing the tie Gigi made for Christmas, and blowing a kiss to her.

10. I get a lot of blogging done because I love to blog! I blog instead of watch TV (except for 24). So when I need to sit for awhile and relax I blog and blog and save posts to use for another day.

I would love to hear how you schedule your days. How do you get it all done? Do you clean your house once a week or everyday?

Diet Coke & Coffee

Thanks to our friend Penne for finding this great quote by Dave Barry. Dave loved it, so it made for a good B-day present.

Poll: if you had to choose- would it be coffee or Diet Coke? Neither for me. More like koolaid :)

There is always something more that can be painted with chalkboard paint!

Got the decoupage bug late Saturday night and started another patchy wall. The other walls have scraps of paper just taped up because I was not sure if it was going to be permanent--but this one just started out with the mod podge. Life it too short to worry about the wall and what future owners will want the kitchen to look like. The wallpaper already poses a problem and does not come off cleanly- so here we go. If I want to change it in the future, I will have to do some plaster finish on top of the decoupaged paper- b/c I am sure that will never come off.
Here is the little wall before

Oh yes- my special prize from Joy at Joy-Full-Ness. Thanks, Joy! LOVE the cute tin!!! And what came inside- see below....
These chocolates are addicting! :)

So while I was at it- I got out the chalkboard paint and painted this wall too. I think I need to stop with the black- but this much is still OK because of how big and bright the kitchen is. The fridge acts like a reflector and makes some funny marks on the wall when a picture is taken with a flash.

sugar & spice

WE LOVE HAND-ME-DOWNS! Another sweet friend gave our little girl some clothes- so we had to get in there and organize. Her armoire NEVER looks this good- usually it is ransacked and jumbled b/c we have looked through it all for the perfect outfit. So I had to take a picture to remember this occasion. And to thank the Lord for providing all of these cute clothes for free!!!!! Thanks to our friends and family who supply the cute tights and skirts and dresses and hats and bows and shoes, etc. etc. You all fill our need for CUTE!!!! That's not all - here is her closet............
Our boys have never had this much clothing combined. Yes, we are spoiled rotten.

dots*heart girl*buttons*rings

little garland for sale at etsy.

I hesitate to tell you about this adorable little heart girl that I won...I know you will hate me :) Remember how I won FringeGirl's giveaway a few weeks ago? Well I have now won 2 more awesome giveaways! I honestly don't surf the web for giveaways. I only enter a giveaway if it is by one of my regular blogs that I read every day. This heart girl was made by Jody at Smilin' Moon Studio. Here is her etsy shop. I LOVE Jody's work and I am ecstatic that I have my very own heart girl. She was packaged up so beautifully and sent with 2 vintage valentines!!!! (please don't hate me too much)

My third big win was at Joy's sweet blog- Joy-full-ness. I didn't get the sweet tin in the mail yet, but when I do I will be sure to show you. Here is her cute etsy shop.

I told Dave that with all of this luck we need to fly to Vegas as soon as possible (just joking) but if you have a giveaway, I am there :)

Some buttons rings slowly getting loaded into the etsy shop.

Mr. Snowman Says Hi

The kids were happy to see that the snow stuck around for another day. And I am reminded how it was growing up and getting all bundled up to go to school everyday. Thanks, Mom, for the patience to zip all of those zippers and put the scarves and hats and mittens and socks and boots on us over the years....I don't think I am as patient as you....

(not to mention all of the wet hats and scarves and mittens and boots and socks and pants that get dropped on the floor.....:)

snow & paint

New! And some great scripture.

Snow in the South is always a big deal. We woke up to white and the kids have already been outside to play and are now running from window to window to watch the flakes and see it stick.

Having fun with abstract. This is a larger canvas- 3 feet x 2 feet. I am planning to take it to the Eclectic Furniture Garden- but will give you the chance first. If you like it you can e-mail me.

I am also selling this painting above the (old) mantle that has been living at my house. It is looking for a new home.....The colorful squares canvas is also 2'x3'.

The abstract fits in nicely here- may be hard to give up....

::::CD Debut::::Just As I Am:::::Dave Mincy-singer/songwriter/husband to sara :)

I cannot say enough about this CD. Dave sings to the Lord from his heart. I am so excited about the blog page that he has set up specifically for Just As I Am. It has a post about each song and how he came to write it, etc. This is good stuff. It makes each song more meaningful. The CDs will be duplicated and back to us in a few weeks.

Want to listen? Go here.

What gets me the most (and NO, don't say I am biased b/c I am his wife! I think I can say that I am not biased b/c there is one song that he plays on the piano that I don't like :) is the heart and real-ness that he puts into his music. He wants to share that with all of us- a human's struggles- even maybe a doubt about God- but we see that God shows Himself strong and able to care for us and bring us through and shows us how wrong our doubts are. That is what Dave's songs are about. The daily trials and joys that we go through and God's Grace- His Love- His Goodness & blessing.

Read all about each song here on the Just As I Am blog.

Pre-Order a CD here for a special price. $12 plus FREE shipping (even to Canada! We love Canadians!)
Pre-Order 5 or more and get them at $10 a piece!!!!!

My favorite songs are:
#1- Then I Will Praise Him
#3- There I Go Again
#4- Psalm 61
#6- Look To Him
#11- You Are God

But then, all of them are good. Let me know what you think after you have listened to the sample tracks.

Surprise Inside Cupcakes

This is another recipe from my mom. Just biting into one of these brings back warm and fuzzy memories. My recipe drawer is full of recipes from my mom. There are 2 kinds- the ones that she wrote out on little 3x5 cards just for me - thanks Mom! And then there are the ones like this one that is written on a ripped piece of paper in my very hastily scrawled printing (I never write in cursive). This was one where I called my mom in desperation and she read off the recipe to me over the phone. Now that we are both e-mail lovers, I get recipes that way.

These are so yummy and magical- how does that little perfect circle of cream cheese filling get in there?

Surprise Inside Cupcakes

Prepare one package of chocolate cake mix
Fill 30 muffin cups 2/3 full (I think I only filled 24 cupcakes cups)
Drop a teaspoon of filling onto each cup of batter

Filling
Beat together: 8 oz. cream cheese (softened)
1/3 c. sugar
dash salt
1 egg

Bake at 350 for 15-25 min (I think mine were in there for closer to 15 min. )

Frosting:
Beat 3/4 c. powdered sugar w/ 2 egg whites (see it is healthy :) til stiff. Cream another 3/4 c. powdered sugar w/ 2T butter. Fold in mixture.

What We are Reading

The almost 3 year old is loving Maisy right now. Fun books!!!! Lucy Cousins - you are doing a GREAT job! keep it up.

All You Ever Need by Max Lucado. The boys love this book and I cry when I read it. Max Lucado has such a way of writing a story that you cannot help but see yourself in the characters. The love of God and our need for Him is shown so clearly.

Alaska's Three Pigs by Arlene Laverde & Illustrated by Mindy Dwyer. Cute and fun- a nice little variation to the Three Little Pigs.

Lynn Austin is one of my favorite authors. She is a Christian author who writes Historical fiction.

What are you reading? I am always looking for a good author. Anyone who knows me, knows my favorite book of all time- but I will share it once again.....

Safely Home by Randy Alcorn. Randy Alcorn is an awesome author. He has painted word pictures of heaven like I have never ever heard of or imagined before. I also love his books; Deception, Dominion, & Deadline.
He has a blog too!

I have put up another blog page- just for each custom painting that gets done for 2009. This page may help you if you are wanting me to paint for you and are looking for ideas. I have this link on my side bar too (custom paintings *2009*).

If you are interested in a custom painting on canvas- I would love to paint for you! Dave & I are tweaking our schedules and finding more hours for me to paint! E-mail me your ideas and I will get back to you with price & details. THANKS TO MY SWEET AND FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS! You are wonderful!

Etsy news- I try to keep the shop stocked- BUT- if you don't see a print that you want- please e-mail me and I will get it in there for you. I am working on more stuff to sell on Etsy and am thinking of sticking some fun things in there just to try. Button rings and painted clothes pins....any other suggestions?

Clip it Up!

I love these little clips- they are perfect for hanging scrapbook paper around. I just pounded in a nail to hold the clip.

It gave me the idea to use the clip for photos- who needs frames! The possibilities are endless- get a clip and hang up pictures, cards, prints, etc, etc. That photo is my family when I was about 6 mo.

painted the pot

This little pot got the green. The black plate came from Goodwill- then got painted with some big white spots.

All done....except for the fireplace screen
