headboard, rain gutters, & a tree

We have a headboard-less bed.

I saw this headboard wall decal from blik:

How cute is that. Now to decide- should I try and paint that?? Should I? Dave, I am sure, would say, "whatever you want." BUT.......

Before I do that- you know who (2 little who's) have been asking for rocket ships on their wall. I am almost 100% decided that I will do one wall of rocket ships in their room, one wall covered in maps, and one wall with chalkboard paint..(what? I have leftovers...).

BUT- the wrought iron bed painted on the wall would take a mere fraction of the time that the boys room is going to take....can you tell I am dreading their room as a project??! It is just all that moving- moving a heavy bunk bed........ etc.

Then I saw this (book shelf made from rain gutters): That would work in the boys room too...and check out the TREE:

Yes- this tree is going to grow at the Mincy house!!!!

****EDIT- I talked to Dave about the headboard and he laughed and said something about being embarrassed he was even having the conversation :) What a good natured man. He may let me paint chalkboards all over- he may put up with colorful papers taped to the wall, he may like the turquoise mantle, and endure the checkered hearth and painted on windows, he may enjoy the orange, red, aqua, lime, & chocolate walls- but for goodness sake he will not have a painted on, fake wrought iron headboard!!! :)

So what do you think about the headboard decals?
How about the book shelves made from rain gutters?
And the tree? Anyone want to make a tree on their wall with discarded pieces of wood? (anyone have any discarded pieces of wood they would like to donate to our tree?!)

love all 3--and tell mr. diet-coke that vinyl decals are great things right now! And if you could paint it. . .all the better. The only thing that I am sad about with Graeme's jackelope is that once the vinyl is on the wall, you cannot reposition it to use it in another spot. . .I'm sure I will figure out a way. . .even if I have to nail it up in our next house. . .but all of that to say, I think it is smart of you to paint the headboard. . .you won't have to worry about not being able to reuse the decal.

At quick glance the headboard looks real! It wasn't until you said it was a decal did I realize and had to look again!

Love the tree! So neat? Will it be in bloom at the Mincy house by the weekend??

The headboard is cute (I love that it's red) but I am sure you could come up with something much cuter on your own. That one looks cute in a picutre, but in person...probably not so much.

I love the tree idea. With five young boys, I could use a tree with about 100 branches and just as many hooks. Wish I had some wood to donate to you.

I have an idea! How about do two walls in the CBP and draw a rocket or two flying over the tree. The rain gutters would look great against a black wall and the books are decoration in themselves. This way if rockets aren't their thing next year- erase and draw the new "it" thing.

I love that tree! I bet you could paint a beautiful headboard.

The headboard would be easy--and so easy to change if you want. We have used the rain gutter bookshelves at my preschool for years, they work great! And I love the tree, can't wait to see yours.

Oh Sara I love them both. I need a headboard on my spare bedroom bed. I thought that was real!! Such cool ideas:) I wouldn't try to paint that though, but that's just me...:o

I LOVE the tree, not so crazy about the rain gutter bookshelf - we have way more books than would fit, if you can only put them side by side. the painted on headboard would be great!

I didn't realize that the headboard was a decal at first. I love that idea! You could even have birds sitting on your wrought iron bed post, if you wanted...
I love that tree!!!! Can't wait to see all your new projects!!!

I love the rain gutter bookcases!!! The painted headboard would be a nightmare to paint, wouldn't it? If everything's not proportionally painted it would be blatantly obvious it's painted. That's my humble opinion, though. As for the tree, if you can't get donated wood (we might be able to help you there), there's a booth at the flea market that sells yardsticks for 50cents to a $1...

I really like the tree. The gutter bookshelves look cool, but they don't seem so great for storing lots of books. They do display the books like art, though. Maybe a combination of gutter shelves and regular shelves would be more practical? I'm not so into the vinyl headboard. There are so many ideas out there for making inexpensive headboards that I'd probably try something more like that. BUT, I bet if you did paint one it would turn out pretty neat.

I LOVE the tree! In fact, I have a hallway begging for a coat rack...just maybe I'll have to get creative.

I'm all about wall decals. Whatever works. I don't have a headboard either, but I have windows flanking my bed and not enough space for the decals. I'm currently searching for a cheap (free really) queen size bed frame that I can paint.

I don't have an opinion about the headboard, but I think Dave is hilarious!

I love that headboard. I have been trying to figure out something for my too-small-for-a-real-headboard bedroom. That looks perfect. I think my husband may think it was goofy, but he might let me do it. He sure puts his foot down in other areas though. Like last week, I asked him if he'd let me paint the piano. After he realized I was serious, he squashed that idea. :)

What an incredible tree... I'm fixing to redo my son's room for his 2 year birthday and he wanted monkeys and this tree would be the perfect thing to put them in.. I adore it. Thanks for sharing it

Love the gutters and the tree. They would both make yet another statement in your already fun house. The headboard I could take or leave. You did ask for opinions, right? :)

I think the tree is absolutely the greatest idea and I plan on doing it in my foyer... thanks for the great idea.

You may consider vinyl wall lettering for the headboard and rockets. TheSimpleStencil.com will custom design it for you if you send them the picture and dimensions for free! It may be easier to tackle and removable. I also love the bookshelves idea... but wonder if I can get my husband to install these in my son's room... he needs shelving despirately... thanks for all these great ideas!

Wow-- love it all, but the tree has to be my favorite!! My boys have a Nature Room... and this will be awesome in it!!!!
(Now, to find some wall space...)

Your boys' room--
remember: "just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming."
One stroke at a time. Pun intended. :-)

We don't have a headboard either and I have tried to come up with a good idea for that wall. Maybe this will be it but I'm not sure yet.

Are you kidding - I would do that awesome TREE in a second! And I was thinking old rulers and yardsticks would look amazing on it also!

I love the idea of a painted headboard - I looked and looked for an awesome one I had seen but couldn't find it... it was more bold and artistic than the wall sticker - it was made to look like Victorian black iron and was SO COOL! Very artsy! I'd keep looking for something unique though... I ADORE headboards and yours must definitely be as unique as you are!

Love,
Meg xoxo
